If your Minnesota tabs are expired and that car is just sitting in the driveway, you can still donate it. With Nordic AutoGift, an expired or lapsed registration almost never disqualifies a vehicle from donation. What matters for the transfer is that you have a valid Minnesota title in your name, not current license plate stickers. You do not need to pay back fees or renew your registration before donating, and the vehicle does not need to be drivable.
Here’s how it works for donors across Minnesota—from Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, and Maple Grove to Duluth, Rochester, Mankato, and small towns in between. Once you donate, Nordic AutoGift sends a towing partner to pick up your vehicle at no cost, usually from your home, workplace, or storage lot. After the title is signed over, the vehicle becomes the responsibility of the charity’s program; you’re no longer on the hook for insurance or future tabs. You’ll receive a tax receipt for at least $500 (or the sales amount if higher), and for donations over $500 you can use IRS Form 1098-C. We’ll also guide you on notifying Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) of the transfer so you’re protected from future tickets, fees, or liability.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have your Minnesota title
Locate your Minnesota vehicle title and make sure your name is listed as the owner. The registration can be expired—what matters is a valid title, not current tabs. If your title is lost, you can request a duplicate from Minnesota DVS. Once you know you can sign the title, you’re ready to start your donation with Nordic AutoGift.
2. Start your donation online or by phone
Provide basic details: year, make, model, location, and note that the registration is expired. Whether you’re in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Brooklyn Park, Eagan, or greater Minnesota, we’ll confirm the title situation and answer any questions about fees, taxes, or old tabs so you know exactly what to expect before pickup.
3. Schedule your free Minnesota tow pickup
We arrange a free tow that works with your schedule—driveway in Edina, apartment lot in St. Cloud, farm near Willmar, or a shop in Duluth. The vehicle does not need to run or be safe to drive. The tow operator will walk you through where to sign the title and collect the keys if you still have them.
4. Sign the title and release ownership
At pickup, you’ll sign your Minnesota title over following our simple instructions. Once the tow truck leaves with your car, Nordic AutoGift’s program assumes responsibility for the vehicle. You can cancel insurance and you no longer need to worry about registration, parking tickets, or storage. We’ll process the donation promptly on our end.
5. Notify Minnesota DVS and keep your receipt
We’ll remind you how to report the transfer to Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services—this protects you from any future liability tied to the car. Shortly after, you receive your tax receipt for at least $500 or the sale amount if higher. If the deduction exceeds $500, you can attach IRS Form 1098-C to your federal return to claim it.
6. Your gift helps Heritage for the Blind
Proceeds from your donated vehicle support Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) providing services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Your problem car with expired registration in Minnesota is turned into practical support for others, and you’ve cleared your space without paying back fees or towing costs.
Potential complications to watch for
Title name doesn’t match the current owner
Tip: If the title is still in a previous owner’s or relative’s name, we’ll need to get that corrected before pickup. Minnesota DVS may require a transfer or affidavit if the titled owner is deceased. Contact us first; we’ll explain what to clarify with DVS so the donation isn’t delayed on tow day.
Active liens still showing on the title
Tip: If a bank or finance company is listed on the title and the lien hasn’t been officially released, we can’t finalize the donation yet. Check the front and back of your Minnesota title for a lien release stamp or letter. If it’s missing, call the lender or DVS to resolve this, then we can move forward smoothly.
Missing plates or very long-expired tabs
Tip: Missing plates or years-old expired tabs are usually fine for donation. The car will go directly on the tow truck, not back on the road. Just be sure it’s accessible for the tow driver. If the vehicle has been impounded or is in a city storage lot, tell us upfront so we can discuss any separate storage or release fees.
Not telling DVS about the transfer
Tip: Even though the title is signed, failing to notify Minnesota DVS could leave you getting mail about the car. After pickup, file the transfer notice or follow DVS’s seller notification process. We’ll remind you of the simple steps so tickets, tolls, or future registration issues don’t come back with your name on them.
